eWorking: The Path To A New Economy.

We are on the verge of a new era in the way businesses are run; this an era of telecommunication and using this new technology has been very productive for many developed countries, telecommuting may prove to be an effective means to enhance our lives and improve our productivity on this new frontier and trying to find ways as to how we can work in a more effective way. eworking, also known as teleworking or telecommuting (please note we would be interchanging these words in this article), is the art of working from a remote location, usually one’s home. Now this is made simple with the use of various telecommunications technologies such as a telephone, fax machine and the Internet. Simply put eworking is moving is moving the work to the workers, instead of moving the workers to work.
eworking is more productive, gives more leisure time, more education, less pollution, a healthier and wealthier society, opens up wider doors and gives room for greater efficiency. Statistics reveals that eworkers are 20%-45% more productive, eworkers can live where they like without breaking up with their family and people with disabilities can contribute their own quota to societal development and also build a fulfilling career. Now they are four types of eworking this includes
1. home based eworking i.e. working from home.
2. satellite offices
3. neighbourhood telework centers this is occupied by workers from more than one organization.
4. Finally Mobile workers.

Esther: Now Esther lives in a rural area in Ebonyi state, where high-tech jobs are rare, Esther finds work on the Internet. She provides secretarial and administrative services as a virtual assistant. Esther works for five clients, each requiring from four to eight hours of her time each time.
Ngozi: is a human relations manger for an accounting firm in Lagos, but resides in Kaduna she drives to a telework centre that is just minutes from her home and saves hours for her employees and rent on office.
Victoria is an auditor in one of the State civil service department, and she lives in Abuja with her family and works at her home office full time. She sees her superiors about twice a year at meetings in porthacourt.

Saving energy: By telecommuting to work instead of using more conventional methods, there is a great potential to save energy. If telecommuting is promoted, there will be less use of equipments and less energy will be required for production e.g. the use of generating sets in offices and hazards that come with it. The office building you use has heating, cooling and lightning needs and all these add up to cost. But when working from home you only use little energy and that’s only for your use.
Another advantage with telecommuting is the
Nearness to your family and Extended families: working in the home offers people a greater opportunity to share quality time with families and unity. Also, time saved through telecommuting could be spent with family members constructively in ways that promote and foster resolution of family problems. Through telecommuting, a person can work for a company in one part of the world, while living in another.
Promotes safety and Preserves our environment: this reduces highway use by people rushing to get to work. There are thousands of traffic- related deaths every year and thousands more severely injured trying to get to work; more and more people are becoming frustrated by the insistence that they come to work everyday, when in fact most, if not all of their work could be accomplished from their home or sites much closer to their home telecommute also an preserve our environment by reducing the number of people on traffic as well.
It Improves productivity: Time is a great factor in many businesses. The time wasted the moment you get up from bed in preparing to go to work would have been used to commute with a terminal. One can simply go to work still on his night robes, you need not worry if the car will start , or if your clothes are neat and ironed. For persons with health problems or handicapped persons working from home may offer some comforting and productive opportunities as well.
Finally it allows Employee freedom: to choose an environment that is more suitable from a social and economic stand point and to live in an area with people of common interest also allows selection of a remote work site that is mutually acceptable to all family members and allows spouse an opportunity to pursue his or her career also reduces number of people looking for jobs each year and much of this job hunting is because people want to move to a new location. They enjoy their work and they would keep working for their present employer, but do not like their present location. If people could move without losing their jobs, they could telecommute, the amount of retraining would be reduced substantially; this would increase overall employee productivity while keeping loyal and productive employees on board. There is no doubt, not everyone could telecommute, nor would everyone want to, but many people could and would, right now, if the incentives were there.

i've asked a couple of guys if there is a possiblity of eworking making an impact in Nigeria and some people see it as not being possible; eworking has been a trend in most developed countries especially in USA but taking the work to the worker is the best way in keeping out stress from the individual and it creates efficiency as well to the company in question

Now we have another impeachment in this country just this morning before people started form work precisely 7.30 am in the morning the Anambra state governor becomes the latest impeached governor Peter Obi had been accussed by the house of representatives of several allegations but be it as it may the new governor who happens to be his deputy in the person of Mrs. Virginia Ediba becomes the first female governor of a state in Nigeria some food for thought though .. but when will this nonsense stop .
